Early in the War in the Pacific during World War II, an elite band of Marine Raiders were called upon to take back the Solomon Islands from the Japanese. They did this with great success. But also with many paying the ultimate price in the process. Niel Morely was a young marine fighting among those waging this tough guerilla type campaign. Years later the Marine Raiders had a reunion in California. Attending this reunion, along with Niel Morely, was a highly decorated native war hero, Jacob Vouza, who later would come to be looked upon as the “Father of his Country.” At this meeting, God used Jacob Vouza to share the spiritual needs of his nation with Morely and to prevail upon him to come to the Solomons, to come and share the gospel with his fellow citizens. Brother Niel Morely heeded the pleas of Jacob Vouza and began a 40 year ministry to that country. There were dozens of churches started as a result of his work. Jacob Vouza renamed his village, "California Village," as a tribute to the work of Missionary Morely. I was privileged to go there on a Short Term Mission Teaching Trip in 1976, while pastor of Sherwood Hills Baptist Church, in Campbelltown, New South Wales. Some of the rest of the story is presented in the items shared here. Sherwood Hills Baptist Church, Campbelltown, New South Wales is still involved in outreach to the Solomons. They sponsor periodic short term teaching ministries there."
